Vatican Secretary of State Calls for ‘Common Rules’ to Govern AI Globally

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin called for international cooperation and common rules for artificial intelligence during a September 16 conference at the Italian parliament.

Parolin said AI is a global phenomenon and expressed concern that some countries may try to develop their own approach without broader cooperation.

He said governments and supranational bodies should be involved in establishing common rules capable of governing the technology.

Parolin also said the possible consequences of artificial intelligence should be examined carefully and described the future of humanity as being at stake in the debate over how AI is developed and used.

When asked whether he would support the immediate creation of an international board to oversee AI, Parolin did not endorse a specific technical structure. He said the Holy See generally focuses on principles rather than proposing a particular regulatory mechanism.

The remarks came as the United Nations continues work on multilateral AI governance and prepares additional international discussions on AI safety and regulation.
