UN Pushes for Shared Global AI Governance as Security Council Prepares New AI Meeting
The United Nations is expanding its work on global artificial intelligence governance as world leaders gather for the UN General Assembly in New York.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for stronger international oversight of AI and warned against a global race in which powerful systems develop faster than governments can manage the risks.
The UN General Assembly has already launched a Global Dialogue on AI Governance and an international scientific panel on artificial intelligence.
In a September 10 speech, the president of the General Assembly said the UN is preparing for another Global Dialogue in New York next May and a high-level review of the Global Digital Compact in 2027.
The UN Security Council is also preparing a new meeting on artificial intelligence during the General Assembly. Reuters reported that technology executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, are expected to brief the Council on AI and international security.
The discussions center on global coordination, shared safety standards, international cooperation and the risks of advanced AI systems.
